How Do Pigs Undergo Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination (AI) is a widely used breeding technique in the pig industry to improve genetic progress and herd productivity. It involves the deposition of diluted refrigerated or fresh semen inside the sow, through a cannula or catheter. The reproductive system of female swine is more conducive to AI than that of cattle or sheep, making AI less time-consuming and easier to accomplish in swine.

The establishment process involves gently squeezing the bottle of semen to start the flow into the cervix. The female may take in the semen herself due to the contractions of the uterus. A gentle squeeze may be needed to start the process, but after that, the semen should be allowed to be taken up by uterine contractions.

When using the PCAI method, the sow should be stimulated by a mature boar and then allowed to relax for 30 minutes before insemination procedures. Use a mature boar (11 months of age or older) to induce the standing reflex necessary during the insemination process. Initiate semen flow by applying gentle pressure on the bottle/tube. Gentle, alternating movement of the catheter may enhance flow of semen.

In conclusion, artificial insemination (AI) is a valuable tool for improving fertility, genetics, labor, and herd health in the pig industry. However, proper management and proper use of AI are essential for its success.
